Policy Submission - Guidelines
Any student at De Montfort University has the right to submit a policy; however policies should be presented in a specific way.
Initially they should be well researched and demonstrate the benefits to the Union of adopting the policy.
The following questions may not be applicable to all policies but they give an idea of some areas that you may wish to consider when suggesting a particular policy:
- Are there other Unions (or general organisations) that have this policy in place? If so, did they experience any difficulties implementing these – what were these and how were they overcome? It is worth noting that just because a particular policy works well or not too well within one union, this does not mean that it will receive the same reaction in another.
- Are there financial benefits or consequences?
- Will the policy have a direct impact (positive or negative) on an individual staff member or group's role?
- Are (a representative sample of) the membership in agreement and how can this be demonstrated?
- Are there likely to be personal/moral objections to this?
- Does the policy favour one group over another?
- Are the staff likely to have issues with this? This is not to say that Union staff can dictate what the policy should be, but that perhaps consultation with them may be required; staff are likely to be responsible for embedding your longer-term policies into the culture of the Union so it is important that you have their support.
Policies of the Union last for three years unless subsequent Council meetings deem them to no longer have any relevance or these are amended and re-approved before they were due to expire.
How to Present Policy
De Montfort University Students' Union policies should be presented in the following format:
- This Union Notes... this section outlines the research behind the policy.
- This Union Believes... as its name suggests, this section outlines what the Union believe.
- This Union Instructs... this section outlines what the Union intends to do as a result of passing the policy.
