INITIATIONS POLICY
This union notes:
- That since 2003 at least 3 students across the UK have died due to initiation ceremonies.
- Binge Drinking within the 18-24 is on the increase. 33% of men and 24% women within this age group are classed as binge drinkers.
- That initiation ceremonies are a long-standing tradition of many clubs and societies at DSU.
This union believes:
- That initiations ceremonies are a tradition of many clubs and societies but should be under taken in a safe environment for all students.
- That DSU should provide a safe space for students to socialise outside of traditional academic hours.
- That existing members of a club or society have a duty of care towards their members that extends beyond specific sporting fixtures.
Initiation ceremonies should not be a cover for or an excuse for behaviour, which in other contexts would be deemed harassment or discrimination.
This union instructs
- That participation in any Initiation activity or part thereof will be completely optional for all members.
- That initiations must allow for cultural and personal beliefs and allow members to opt-out without fear of undue pressure, reprisal or any other discrimination.
- Initiation ceremonies should not use pressure or intimidation to force students into excessive binge drinking, substance abuse or humiliating activities against their will.
- That initiation participation is not a prerequisite for selection and inclusion within a club or society.
- That all members of clubs and societies must show respect towards members of the public and other members of DSU at all times.
- That all initiation ceremonies should adhere to DSU existing policies specifically the Anti Harassment policy and the Equality policy.
- That any club or society found to have broken the initiation policy may be sanctioned under the DSU constitution.
