DSU AT EXTERNAL EVENTS

The Union notes

  • Students and Elected Officers represent DSU at conferences and training events;
  • Representatives have a duty to the membership to portray a positive image of DSU and attend all sessions of the conference or event at which they are present;
  • Conference delegation leaders have no specific rules or regulations in place to deal with poor behaviour and attendance such issues can be dealt with via the disciplinary schedule.

This Union Believes

  • That any student or elected officer attending an external event on behalf of DSU should ensure they represent DSU in an active and positive manner on all occasions;
  • That any student or elected officer attending an external event on behalf of DSU should be held fully accountable for there actions;
  • That the types of incidents committed by delegates can be split into two types.

Minor - including (but not exhaustive):-

  • Being late on conference floor;
  • Not keeping in contact with the delegation;
  • Having extended time off conference floor;
  • Being under the influence of intoxicating substances while on conference floor;
  • Leaving the conference floor without informing the delegation leader.

Major - including (but not exhaustive):-

  • Voting against adopted DSU policy unless otherwise stated in election manifesto;
    Intimidation;
  • Breaking existing Union or NUS policy (for example Equal opportunities);
  • Non attendance of a session(s);
  • Being under the influence of illegal substances at any time.
  • The delegation leader should be supported and empowered to tackle the issues as they arise;
  • When delegation is not filled by cross campus ballot, the Executive Officers and Student Council should not have to run in elections to NUS Conference as they have already been voted in by cross campus.

The Union Instructs

  • The delegation leader should have the power to address the incidents referred to above;
  • The delegation leader will have the ability to speak to representatives about minor incidents of poor behaviour. Where a major incident or repeated minor incidents occur the delegation leader will have the right to ask a representative to leave the event and return at cost to themselves;
  • The delegation leader who believes there are grounds to ask a representative to leave an event should first seek advice from a DSU senior manager or the DSU Democracy and Representation Co-ordinator. However, if none of these people are available they may proceed to deal with the issues;
  • Once the conference or event has concluded, the delegation leader will report through the appropriate channels within DSU and a decision regarding formal disciplinary action will be taken;
  • That students wanting to be elected to attend National Conference must produce a manifesto, as are being elected to go as representatives;
  • That all delegates at NUS Conference should support any members of DSU who are standing for regional or national positions.
