► Sporting Facilities Policy
DMU Should improve our Sporting Facilities
This Union Notes
- DSU has over 80 sports clubs and societies;
- Many of our sports teams currently have to use training grounds off campus as DMU lacks appropriate facilities;
- For many teams this involves the cost and time of travel;
- The Government has released a White Paper entitled ‘Choosing Health’ which promotes improving fitness;
- The Gameplan1 report set a government objective of ‘a major increase in participation in sport and physical activity, primarily because of the significant health benefits and to reduce the growing costs of inactivity.’;
- There is a national trend showing an increase in personal health, including people attending the gym;
- Despite the quality of sports facilities on campus, those facilities that exist are well used by students.
This Union Believes
- Being a part of a Club or society adds value to the university experience;
- Students involved in clubs and societies gain invaluable skills to those involved;
- Better sporting facilities can make sports and fitness more available to the wider student body;
- With the current climate of lower student admissions better facilities such as sporting facilities may be a way of combating this trend;
- Engagement in sport and physical activity enhances the well-being of students.
This Union Resolves:
- That the Executive, led by VP Student Activities, should continue to lobby the University for better sporting facilities for its students and City Council for better sporting facilities for the community;
- The VP Student Activities should look into sports grants from Local Council, Government and other such organisations to give further weight to the campaign for better facilities.
