EQUALITY POLICY
Passed October 2005 AGM
Lapses October 2008
This Union Notes
1. That students can face discrimination because of who they are.
2. That the four NUS liberation groups still need developing further:
➢ Students with Disabilities (SWD)
➢ Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Trans (LGBT)
➢ Women
➢ Black Students
3. That there are two forms of discrimination. Direct discrimination is when one person is treated less favourably than another on the grounds of race, colour, ethnicity or natural origin or nationality, health, gender, martial status, age, disability, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, or background. Indirect discrimination is when a rule or condition if applied to everyone can be me by a considerably smaller proportion of people from a particular group, which puts them at a disadvantage and cannot be justified on non-discriminatory grounds.
This Union Believes
1. That it exists as an institution to best represent the interests of all its members
2. That no person should be discriminated against either directly or indirectly on grounds of their race, colour, ethnicity or natural origin or nationality, health, gender, martial status, age, disability, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs, or background.
3. No form of discrimination is any more acceptable than any other: all are wrong
4. One of the main causes of prejuidiced or discriminatory behaviour is ignorance
5. It is the responsibility of DSU students, especially Union Officers, to prevent discriminatory attitudes and actions
This Union Instructs
1. That its facilities should not be used to perpetrate any form of discrimination.
2. That no discriminatory views can be expounded in the Union
3. That necessary steps will be taken to tackle all forms of discrimination, through policies, procedures, promotion of good relations and DSU Media.
4. The Executive to support the four NUS Liberation campaigns, and any other NUS initiative that is aimed at tackling discrimination and prejudice.
5. That the treatment of students is based solely on merit, ability and potential in recruitment, selection, training, development and promotion.
6. To respect and value the differences between people and make the Union a place where individuals feel valued irrespective of any differences.
7. That any deliberate breach of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action being taken.
Proposed by: James Dixon, Deputy President Welfare & Education
Seconded by: Rachel Chalmers, Centre Vice President (Leicester)
1 The term Black is used in line with the NUS definition: "NUS Black Students' Campaign exists to represent all students who are of African, Asian, Caribbean and Arab heritage." (NUS, 2005)
