NO PLATFORM AND EXTREMIST GROUPS POLICY
The Union Notes
• That extremist individuals or groups are known to have issued threats and caused serious physical harm to those who oppose them, and also to the members of the communities that the extremist groups choose to persecute.
• The union has long had an extremist groups policy and no platform policy in place
This Union Believes
• That racism and fascism is still rife in all areas of society and that it should be confronted wherever it is found.
• That there are many groups, political and religious, present in varying degrees of activity throughout the University community. In addition these groups by nature of their beliefs and activities are already in contravention of existing Student Union policy by exposing their opinions of discrimination and hatred.
• That students and student unions have a long and proud record of achievement in the fight against racism and fascism.
• That inline with the Union’s equality policy, the Union should be at the forefront of campaigns to combat prejudice in the form of ethnic origin or religious beliefs, i.e. racism of fascism.
• That a no platform policy is a key element in the fight against racism on-campus. Furthermore the presence of racist, fascist, and/or extremist groups within the Student Union is to its detriment as it endeavours to create a safe and discrimination free environment for all students.
This union identifies
• There are many groups which are detrimental to our community, including : BNP (British National Party), Combat 18, Church of Christ, Hizb-ut-Tahrir, Islamic Liberation Party, National Democrats, National Front, 1924 committee.
• Any other group, who by the nature of their beliefs and activities, contravene existing union policy.
• That some extremist groups stand for election in the surrounding areas of the University campus.
This union instructs
• Not to allow any individual or group who is known to hold racist or fascist views from entering Union premises, to speak at any Union event, or distribute any written or recorded material in the Union that expresses those views.
• That the Union will not give the aforementioned groups the platform to communicate their beliefs or extend any form of support to allow them to access our facilities or services.
• That no elected officer of the Union will knowingly speak on a platform with an individual who is known to hold racist or fascist views.
• That should anyone be found actively supporting the aforementioned groups on Student Union property they will be asked to leave the building and may be subject to disciplinary action.
• That the President, in conjunction with other elected officers will educate the membership as to why we have and no platform policy.
• That if any extremist groups stand for election in the local community DSU will campaign against this group and make the students aware that their vote counts.
• That any person who is in violation of this policy will be subject to the union's disciplinary procedures as detailed in the DSU Constitution.
